HERALD MAGAZINE: VERMONT'S GAY MARRIAGES
The state of Vermont, USA, was
one of the first to allow 'civil unions' between same
sexes. I travelled there, through one of their most brutal
winters, to spend time with the six main plaintiffs,
their partners, their lawyers and the politicians involved
in the debate. Sitting in a crowded state capitol building
as each member of the public got a couple of minutes
to record their views was, for me at least, a slice of
American democracy at its open and best. Download

HERALD MAGAZINE: CAYMAN ISLANDS MONEY LAUNDERING: AN
INVESTIGATION
This story started off small
- I spotted a little article about a British Cayman
Islands bank going bust - then I was given a tip-off
about an FBI investigation; the next thing I knew I'd
managed to persuade the DA's office in Newark, New
Jersey, to lay out the whole inside story for me. Within
a week as I sat in New Jersey speaking to the FBI and
looking at internal documents, I half-expected Tony
Soprano to walk in the door at any moment. It was an
education in how lax UK money-laundering regulations
really are. And it all started, in reality, with someone
selling door-to-door satellite TV receivers. Download

HERALD MAGAZINE: THE BOMBING OF THE ISRAELI EMBASSY IN
LONDON: AN INVESTIGATION
This was another alleged miscarriage
of justice case which I was asked to independently
investigate. Two young Palestinians were jailed for
the 1994 bombing of the Israeli Embassy in the middle
of London. It was a horrific and meticulously planned
terrorist attack. I interviewed policemen, forensic
experts, witnesses, family members of the convicted
pair and intelligence experts during this four month
investigation. Eventually I concluded that something
had gone dreadfully wrong during the whole police investigation
into the incident. I tried my best to lay the evidence
out fairly so that readers could arrive at their own
conclusion - see what you think. To date, the two convicted
bombers remain in a top security British jail. Download
